MA SOCIAL PRACTICE AND THE CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT

MA SPACE Online Taught Masters Programme in Social Art Practice / Socially Engaged Art.

Some artists create moments of contemplation, reflection, a moment to question, a moment for critique, to challenge, to offer perspective, to imagine an alternative.
Their creativity can invoke discovery, unveiling, revealing, contesting. Moments can be joyful, celebratory.
Some artists make art that responds, confronts, refuses, that reframes and refocuses...
If this sounds like you, then this programme is for you.

This Masters programme is for you if you prefer to, or need to study from a distance.  The programme will support and prepare you to realise a social art project - where you are based.

MA Social Practice and the Creative Environment at LSAD is now Irelands first online master’s programme in Socially Engaged Art practice.

Building on over ten years of excellence, MA SPACE has been shortlisted twice for the prestigious HEA Graduate Ireland Postgraduate Programme of the Year Awards in 2019 and 2020.

Social Practice is located in the overlap of art, society and politics. It has been described as art activism, critical art, socially engaged art, social practice art, activism, political art, participatory, or dialogical art.

The programme is delivered over one year with contributions from the best international practitioners in the field.  The online delivery is further supported with a number of West of Ireland based gatherings, where we will get to know each other and will build a new learning community in the field of social art practice.

Our postgraduates engage in a mixture of theoretical and practical learning modes, with an emphasis on building a sustainable practice that supports you into your future career.

MA SPACE was Shortlisted for the GradIreland Higher Education Awards in 2019 and has been again for 2020 as Postgraduate Course of the Year in Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

MA SPACE invites candidates from Art, Design and other related fields who are interested in creating art that draws on societal topics.  Previous topics have broadly included; Climate Change, environmental politics, Rural ecologies, Food Politics, Ecology, Science and Art, Body Autonomy, Globalization and Economics, Health, Urban publics, Trans-Global Movement, Labour,  Land Politics and more.

A unique feature of this programme is that we do not expect a project to be completed in the timeframe of the programme.

We expect a project to be initiated with a clear theoretical frame, purpose, context and mode of practice.

We do not prescribe what social, or socially engaged arts practice is, each postgraduate student is supported to develop a practice that is appropriate to their development as an artist.  Our goal is to support our postgraduates to initiate a way of working as an artist that is sustainable and that will serve our graduates long after they have graduated from the programme.
