MA programme socially engaged art, Limerick, Ireland

Initially the course leads you through the critical and theoretical frameworks current in the field of social practice. Semester One is designed to fuel your practice by providing the context for engagement in a variety of social contexts. You will meet key artists, designers, policy makers, agencies and brokers of public situations, who will put forward models of best practice.

The second stage of the programme you propose and initiate an art project, working in your chosen area of interest.

Uniquely, we do not demand that your project is completed in the timeframe of the programme, experience tells us that project timelines are unpredictable and often rely on external factors over which artists may not have full control.  We ask instead that your project is established on the programme. Meaning you identify your project focus, your community or communities of interest and you experiment and test processes of art making in context.  This is critically framed, documented and reflected on.

Since 2010 over 200 national and international visiting lecturers have contributed to the MA SPACE programme.

This has included: Wochenklauser, Austrian Artist Collective; Superflux, UK/India based Design Company; Gideon Koppel, UK based Film Maker; Dr. Adam de Eyto, Sustainable Designer and Researcher; Sarah Browne, Artist; Ailbhe Murphy - Director of CREATE; Cliodhna Shaffrey, Independent Curator; Dr. Eileen Humphries, Sociologist/Researcher; Caroline Campbell - The Irish Visual Artists Rights Organisation (IVARO); Phillip Delamere, Arts Office, Roscommon County Council; Wooloo, Danish Artist Collective; Basurama, Madrid based Design Collective, Ultra-Red, Activist Art Collective; Caludia Zeiske-Director of Deveron Community Arts (UK); Megan Johnston, USA based Independent Curator.
